Chapter Twelve

“You really don’t need to do this hike,” I said, still worried about her injured leg.

“Are you kidding me?” Joyelle said. “My choices are to climb the cliffs at Dixville Notch or sit at the camp and twiddle my thumbs. By the way, I love this kind of stuff. And with the bandage on my leg, I have one shin already protected,” she laughed. “Don’t worry about me.”

I reached out for her hand to assist her on the last step. Thankfully, she didn’t brush it away this time. My intention wasn’t to tell her I didn’t believe she could do it, but to show her that we could easily do it together.

Once on top of the mountain, we both stood there in awe of the beauty surrounding us. I’d climbed many mountains, but the company I kept today made this hike even more memorable than the highest and most challenging peaks.

It hit me earlier when I was running to find her in the woods: I was starting to have feelings for Joyelle. My gut had been twisted in a knot, and I couldn’t breathe. Even though it wasn’t a serious injury, I had considered telling everyone we were packing up and heading home. That wouldn’t have gone over well with Joyelle. This weekend was pulled together so quickly for one reason. To see the beautiful smile that shines in her eyes.

“I can’t believe I’ve never been here before. It’s amazing.”

“It is,” I said, focused on her.

“Do you know I hiked Mt. Washington? It was a clear day and they said you could see five states and also Canada. Of course, the trip back down was a killer. I have a hard time going slow in some things.”

Are we still talking about hiking? When she turned to face me, I had my answer. It wasn’t the skyline I saw in her eyes now but wanting. My cock hardened. Reaching out I pulled her close and lifted her into my arms. She wrapped her legs around my hips and I adjusted my hold to cup her ass, holding her close.

Our lips collided in an explosive kiss. The raw need between us was undeniable. I left her lips only long enough to kiss her jaw and neck, then returned to explore her mouth again. I felt my t-shirt being tugged and I broke our contact long enough for her to pull it over my head.

Before I kissed her again, she pulled off her own shirt. When she leaned against my chest again, the feel of her cool flesh against mine ignited my hunger even further. Fuck, I want you.

Although we had hiked quite far, we were still on a path. Anyone could come walking by. It wasn’t likely, but I didn’t want any interruptions this time.

I pulled away and said, “We need to stop.” She pulled me closer and I quickly added, “Just for a few minutes, till we get someplace more…private.”

Joyelle nodded and I took her hand. We made our way off the path and only stopped when we came upon a small clearing.
